1 Link, Howard A. THEATRICAL PRINTS OF THE TORII MASTERS: A SELECTION OF SEVENTEENTH AND EIGHTEENTH -CENTURY UKIYO-E.
Honolulu Honolulu Academy Arts / Riccar Art Museum 1977 0804813000 / 9780804813006 Hardcover Fine in Near Fine DJ
119 pp. Approx. 11.5x8.5 in. Illustrated throughout in B/W & color. Describes and reproduces a selection of single-sheet woodblock prints and a few leaves of illustrated books published over a period of about 100 years, from the 1670s to the 1760s. This volume was designed to accompany an exhibition dealing with the Torii family of ukiyo-e artists, who had a virtual monopoly over the the production of theatrical illustrations for the Edo kabuki stage during much of this period. Beginning around 1700, the Torii school emerged as an active force in the illustration of kabuki subjects and established a standard in the representation of yakusha-e (pictures of actors) that was to prove so persuasive that dozens of later artists borrowed the formula. Their depictions can be divided into two distinct types: a quiet curvilinear illustration derived from the more polished and elegant acting tradition of Kamigata (Osaka-Kyoto region), and the more forceful designs celebrating the bombastic drama of Edo-style kabuki. The origin and emergence of these important styles and their sophisticated adaption by succeeding generations of the Torii school id the subject of this text.
